At a glance

In India, how you sound decides how you're treated — accent and fluency become labels before anyone knows you.

Fluently Kind turns that into streetwear: cheeky, wearable jokes about language prejudice that celebrate what we share instead of lecturing.

Outcome · A full brand platform, a four-piece collection with print specs in six scripts, and a concept store page for the drop.

The origin story · Bengaluru

Same ride. Different language. Different price.

₹400
₹400

“₹400 fixed madam, one-way charge!”

An invisible linguistic boundary, set in one sentence.

Personal recollection from the designer — not research or a claim about all Bengaluru auto drivers.

How many labels do we attach before we actually know someone?

The linguistic label

Accent is used as a test of who belongs.

Add your research sourcesArticles, conversations or surveys behind the accent-prejudice angle.

Speakers are trapped between two judgements — mocked for how they sound in corporate hubs, and accused of losing their roots at home. Language becomes an arbitrary litmus test for who counts as local, smart or trustworthy.

Beyond Labels. Beyond Labels. “accent” “outsider” “not fluent” “local?”
Drag the labels off — or tap them.
First provocation · explored

“We listen and we don't judge.”

The first direction was direct and multilingual: colourful distressed lettering, layered scripts, graphic tees. It proved Devanagari, Tamil, Bengali, Gurmukhi and Kannada could sit beside Latin type as pop streetwear — not clinical translations.

Why it moved onVisually arresting, but it was still describing the problem rather than giving the wearer a cultural joke to wear.

A slogan by itself felt too generic. Streetwear demands a visual premise — a joke, an object parody, an interaction or an emotional truth.

Verbal audit & territories

Three rejected tones. One that stuck.

REJECTEDTerritory A

Lecture

Too lecture-heavy. Felt like an NGO poster.

REJECTEDTerritory B

Safe

Too safe. Lost the street grit and edge.

REJECTEDTerritory C

Pretty

Beautiful, but needed a stronger punchline.

SELECTEDTerritory D

Cheeky

Playful sarcasm + tangible parody objects.

Process anchor · strategic pivot

From fighting judgement to finding similarity.

  1. The spark. Confronting the instant reflex to judge people by how they sound.
  2. Universal dialects. “Kindness has no accent.” “No translation needed for kindness.”
  3. Redefining fluency. From grammatical perfection to emotional openness and listening.
  4. The umbrella. Expanding from language to every arbitrary category we sort each other by.
Before

Defensive

Message-first, only about phonetic discrimination. Sounded like a public-service announcement.

After

Similarities in differences

Celebratory and cheeky, rooted in recognisable objects — parody medicine boxes, sound waves, brain mascots.

Why The Souled StoreA graphic-apparel context that turns a social observation into something wearable, collectible and conversational.
Design system & typography

Built through experiments, not picked from a catalogue.

Scalability

Language is just the first label.

LANGUAGE class region culture

The platform scales beyond accents into class, regional and cultural exclusion — every arbitrary category we use to sort people before we know them.

Return to the question

Different words.
Different accents.
Different scripts.

Shared feelings.

The Bengaluru ride didn't answer everything. But the same journey felt radically different when the language changed. Fluently Kind turns that moment into a wider question: what if we noticed the similarities in our differences before deciding what those differences mean?
